Dépatie-Marsan basin to get new sewer and aqueduct network
New sewer and aqueduct conduits will be built this summer at the Dépatie-Marsan basin in Cartierville. This work will make it possible to regulate major water flow irregularities that are causing sewers to overflow and water accumulation at Sainte-Odile Park during heavy rainfalls.
To complete this work, the city of Montreal will invest $4.5 million. In addition to updating the network in this sector bordered in the east and west by Colbert and Lavigne Streets, in the south by de Salaberry Street and in the north by Gouin Boulevard, this reorganization includes the addition of a branch connection. In effect Jules-Colas Street, which is presently connected to the network of neighbouring streets, will have its own line of sewers.

"Currently, the network is insufficient to offer to residents an adequate protection against sewers that overflow,” said Marie-Élaine Ladouceur a spokesperson for the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. “This work will make it possible to increase the flow by liters a second avoiding the problems."

A resident of Guertin Street, who has lived in the sector since 1999, noticed a problem of drainage opposite his residence. "It is traditional, year after year, in spring, the sewer overflows at a given time."
Network to be remade
In Montreal, the aqueduct and sewer network is obsolete. According to a study by the SNC-Lavallin/ Dessau-Soprin consortium, the aqueduct system in Ahuntsic-Cartierville will on average reach the end of their service life in 2011. Regarding sewers, they will be "out-of-date" in 2036.
In this same study, which was carried out on behalf of the city of Montreal, in the next 20 years, 88% of the network of the borough will have to be replaced. In all, $161 million will have to be invested over 20 years to restore the network.

For the year 2007, in addition to the Dépatie-Marsan basin, the borough also identified the sewer and aqueduct system on Olympia Street as a priority. Work on rebuilding the conduits on this artery, between Henri-Bourassa and Gouin Boulevards, will be carried out next fall. The year of construction of the aqueduct was in 1914 and 1926.

With regard to the future, the borough awaits the submission of a study carried out over the last few months on the state of the infrastructure of Ahuntsic-Cartierville before establishing what will be the next sectors affected by major work. (Translated by Michael Beigleman)
