Council highlights
Before proceeding with the borough council meeting, council members Michèle D. Biron and Maurice Cohen were honoured for their 25 years of political implication. A moment of respect was also observed in the memory of Patrick Kieran, who passed away on October 25. Mr. Kieran was a member of the St. Laurent council from 1982 until 1994 and was part of Technoparc’s board of directors from 1996 until recently.
Time for some action… for the families
The approval of the 2008-2010 triennial action family plan was the element that stood out of this council meeting. It includes a number of concrete actions in different fields like public security, transport, environment, culture and communication.
Within this same plan, the borough will officially ask the Société de transport de Montréal to examine the possibilities of allowing a family fare for public transport. The triennial action family plan will be the subject of a detailed article in the next issue of the St. Laurent News.
The citizens still want answers
A few residents showed up to the microphone for the question period to ask about the status of two of the hottest topics in St. Laurent: the opening of Cavendish Boulevard and noise pollution caused by airplanes. Mayor Alan DeSousa answered to the first question by saying that he will consider every expert advice, including Tecsult’s, before starting road works on Cavendish.
Mr. DeSousa then mentioned that the latest Comité de gestion du climat sonore meeting will provide some new information by January.

A member of CARI St. Laurent also asked if it would be possible to set up a babysitting service near the borough hall on nights where the council is taking place, so that more women could be present. The Mayor said he would consider the suggestion and see if a pilot project is feasible.
The danger prevention team
The council approved a subsidy application to the minister of Sécurité publique du Québec within the Programme conjoint de protection civile to allow the communication campaign on major industrial risks planned in 2008 by the Comité mixte arrondissement-industries of St. Laurent. Representatives from the borough and the industries and two citizens are forming this industry danger awareness comity.
Why hug a tree when you can hug a forest
The City of Montreal’s intervention in the agreement between the Hydro-Québec foundation for environment and the Comité écologique du Grand-Montréal for the restoration and faunal development project of the Marcel-Laurin woods was also approved by the council.
