Families celebrate health
The Bordeaux-Cartierville Family Celebration of will take place under the theme, ‘Generations in Health,’ Saturday May 12 at the l’Acadie Centre des loisirs (2005 Victor-Doré Street), from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A tradition in the district for seven years, this celebration has allowed children, parents and grandparents to share a beautiful moment as a family.
The wide range of programs for the festival, which takes place within the framework of Quebec Families Week, is centred on physical activity and healthy food. "In conjunction with our theme, we made an effort regarding the food that is being served,” said school representative Jean-François Adam, at a press conference where the program for the event was presented. “There will be the opportunity of buying healthier food on site."

The canteen run by the Maison des jeunes will suggest, for example, the traditional barbecue, but will not serve soft drinks or chips. It will rather offer water, juice and muffins prepared by volunteers.

Among about 15 organizations and institutions that will be on site including La Corbeille and les Ateliers cinq épices, the Health Education Centre from the CLSC will convey information on healthy food.

In addition to sports activities, such as soccer and dodge ball, events will also take place outside the Centre des loisirs where shows and activities will be featured. It will be possible to partake in karate, Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts and improvisation.

The improvisation teams from Évangeline and Dauversière Schools will present a 30-minute match to demonstrate what this game consists of. "It is the occasion to give an example of an activity offered in our secondary schools,” said Adam. “It is interesting to see that our young people are articulate and that they have verbal skills."
Ecological procession and discovering reptiles
Visitors will also be able to take part in original activities. To show what clothing one can discover at the community second hand clothes shop in the district, le centre d’entraide Cartier Émilie will present a parade of ecologic fashion.
Families will be able to discover the universe of reptiles. Organizers will make it possible for the brave to touch various species kept in 12 vivariums. A contest for the funniest family photos is also being organized. All one needs to do is to send a pleasant family photo to sqf.bordeauxcartierville@yahoo.ca.

The day of activities will finish with Fredo the magician. Known to young people, this colourful character will present his new show, ‘En attendant.’

The organizing committee of the festival, comprised of several participants from the educational, institutional and community circles, hope to attract 1,000 visitors. (Translated by Michael Beigleman)
